Malcesine Castle Wedding
When Kylie asked me to photograph her and Andre’s Malcesine Castle Wedding at Italy’s Lake Garda, she made sure I understood she wanted spontaneous, unposed reportage style images. This is one of the most difficult styles of wedding photography as there is no posing, directing or even pausing. Everything at a wedding moves really, really quickly, so I was keen to capture all the little details and moments, as well Kylie’s irrepressible personality: she was possibly the happiest and most relaxed bride I have ever worked with. After getting ready at an apartment with views over the castle tower, the bride and her fabulous (and so, so friendly) bridesmaids made their way, arm in arm, through the streets of Malcesine to the Castle, stopping off on the way to have a sneaky limoncello at a local bar, amidst much hilarity. Just brilliant.
The ceremony proceeded just as beautifully after that. Kylie’s dashing father accompanied her down the open air aisle to the gazebo overlooking the lake, both of them half laughing, half crying, finally reaching Andre at the venue’s glass ceremony table where he, the best man, the official celebrant and translator were waiting for the bride. The civil ceremony that followed was both moving and light-hearted, with all eyes on this lovely couple who so clearly only had eyes for each other.
The group of friends and family then proceeded through the colourful streets of Malcesine (to scattered applause from local residents!) to meet the boat that was awaiting them at the dock, ready to take them around the lake… but not before I practically threw the couple onto the little castle balcony overhanging the lake for just one “directed” romantic shot. As you can see, that ended in giggles too…
